Composition of us and the river
2021-present
Casted glass, metal stands, river water, and breastmilk
Originally commissioned and made for beautiful window space on Hudson Street near the Hudson River, Hur’s site-specific piece Composition of us and river - “liken it to the dance” brings a poetic presence of river water and light.
As a continuation of Hur’s recent project So we can be near, the artist gathers river water as her material. Using the site’s particular window as a mediator, the artist has chosen a sheet of rippled, casted glass to hold river water. Daylight seeps through the casted glass and river water, projecting its light and shadow into the window space. River water held in casted glass is right above eye level, shifting our usual perspective encountering rivers.
In 2023 after the artist became a new mother, Hur made a second set of casted glass, capturing the artist’s changed relation with her body and its capacity for care, nuture, and production. In a group exhibition titled “In Absentia” curated by Eliana Blechman, Hur fills the sculptures with liquid mixture of breastmilk and water.
“Reflections of light on the shifting liquid surface change over months of display, mirroring the ways in which grief shifts and comes in waves over time. Incorporating water and milk into the negative space of her own body, Hur elicits memories of and hopes for a baptismal rebirth.” - Eliana Blechman
